CORRECTION-ROMANIA-US-DEFENSE-ANTI MISSILE SHIELD
(L-R) US Vice Admiral James D Syring, Romanian President Traian Basescu , James N Miller , US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (USDP) and Mircea Dusa, Romanian Defence Minister shovel during the official groundbreaking ceremony at the former Deveselu military airbase in Deveselu village, southern Romania, on October 28, 2013, hosting as of end 2015 a US anti-missile-shield. A total of 24 SM-3 interceptors will be deployed at the airbase hosting a maximum of 500 US troops. Originally planned by Washington to be installed as its anti-missile shield in Poland and the neighbouring Czech Republic, aimed at countering feared attacks from Iran. But that plan, which angered Russia after it saw itself as the target for the shield system, was scrapped by US President Barack Obama in September 2009. AFP PHOTO DANIEL MIHAILESCU
