FRANCE-MARINE-SCIENCE-BIODIVERSITY-ANIMALS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY EMMA VARLEY
Philippe Lenfant, director of the 'Sublimo' project at the Center for Research of Marine Ecosystems (Centre de recherches sur les écosystèmes marins - CREM), in Le Barcares, in the western Pyrenees, points at fish grown in laboratory aquariums, which were raised from natural fish larvae, on October 15, 2013, in Le Barcares. The center is one of seven sites chosen across France to conduct experiments on taking fragile fish larvae from the ocean, growing the larvae into fish in laboratory aquariums and then reintroducing the fish into their natural habitat. The research is known as the Sublimo project and follows a widespread observation that mortality rates of fish larvae have been on the rise, mostly due to environmental factors such as pollution or construction, and that humans must play a more active role in promoting marine biodiversity and sustainable fishing practices.
