NETHERLANDS-BLACK PETE

A decorative Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) 'flies' in a department store in The Hague, The Netherlands, on November 15, 2013. Zwarte Piet is, as part of the Dutch tradition, the companion of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas), a yearly feast celebrated on the evening of 5 December. It was announced in October 2013 that the United Nations, under the authority of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, were to investigate whether Zwarte Piet is a racist stereotype.
