General (retired) Gregorio Alvarez, dictator between 1981-1985 during Uruguay's military regime (1973-1985), leaves a police court handcuffed on December 19th, 2007, in Montevideo, two days after being charged for crimes against humanity. Alvarez was charged and jailed Monday pending trial for crimes against humanity during his rule, court sources said. Judge Luis Charles issued an arrest warrant and detailed charges against Alvarez, 82, who was sought since November 12 for alleged responsibility for abduction of suspected political opponents in 1978 who were sent to Buenos Aires and believed to have then been executed.
