TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY JOHN HADOULIS

Vassilis Goulandas, 48, eyes two hunting dogs looking for truffles in the Mount Olympus forest on November 14, 2013. One product attracting increasing attention, hitherto little-known in Greece but with a major following in France, Italy and Spain, is truffle. Greece was terra incognita for truffles until the beginning of the decade. In the rolling hills beneath Mount Olympus, the home of Greece's ancient gods, livestock rearing and agriculture are a centuries-old way of life. Formerly an agricultural society, Greece changed dramatically in the postwar period by placing emphasis on mining, construction and tourism. Fields were abandoned and entire villages were depopulated, but the trend is now being reversed as Greeks look to more affordable life in the countryside to escape soaring unemployment in cities.
