FRANCE-SENEGAL-ENTERTAINMENT-CULTURE-ACADEMY-SAFRICA-MANDELA
Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow (R), flanked by former Senegalese president and General secretary of the Francophony Abdou Diouf (C), and Senegal's first lady Marieme Faye (L), presents the sword he received as he joined France's Academy of Fine Arts during an official ceremony in Paris on December 11, 2013. Sow, who sculpted Nelson Mandela as a goalkeeper extending his hand "to keep corrupt African heads of state at bay", was honoured in his adoptive France. At the ceremony in Paris, Sow -- the first African to be invited to join France's Academy of Fine Arts -- dedicated the honour to "all of Africa, its diaspora and the great man Nelson Mandela".
