US-AGING-PRISONERS-MAKE-UP-FASTEST-GROWING-SEGMENT-OF-NATION'S-P
CHOWCHILLA, CA - DECEMBER 18: Gary Soule, age 61, helps fold bed sheets in the laundry department at Valley State Prison (VSP) on December 18, 2013 in Chowchilla, California. " When you're older you gotta keep up...there are a lot of young guys in here...if you don't keep up, you fall into old-man-syndrome and then they send you to the hospital," Soule says. He has served 25 years of a life sentence for murder, he goes before the parole board in two years. "The good side of being a little older and a little wiser is that they give you more opportunities," Soule comments. Today Soule helped process 487 pounds of bed sheets. The California Prison Industry Authority, an entity within the state's Department of Corrections, employs prisoners to manufacter a variety of goods and services; at VSP prisoners are employed to do laundry, make glasses for the elderly and minors, and harvest almonds. California had 133,000 prisoners, of which 15,000 were over the age of 55. The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other country in the world - as of 2010 the national prison population was 2.26 million people. According to Human Rights Watch, between 1995 and 2010 the total number of state and federal prisoners incresased by 42%, while the number of prisoners 55-and-older skyrocketed by 282%.
