This image courtesy of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon shows Green Wheat Fields, Auvers, 1890 Oil on canvas (28 3/4 x 36 5/8 inches (73 x 93 cm) by Vincent Van Gogh. The painting which had rarely been seen by the public, was given to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where it is now viewed, the National Gallery of Art announced on December 20, 2013. The work was probably painted a few weeks before the death of the artist.The painting part of the legacy of philanthropist Paul Mellon, who died in 1999, was acquired in December 1955. In this painting, Van Gogh eliminates the rural figures, stony walls, wooden carts, dramatic trees, and rustic buildings that populate so many of his landscapes and focuses instead on the windblown clouds and tall grasses.
