Professor Alain Carpentier is the co-founder of Carmat, the French biomedical firm who conceived a prototype artificial heart. The first transplant of a bioprosthetic artificial heart made by Carmat was performed on December 18, 2013 at the Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris, Carmat announced on December 20, 2013, adding that the surgery had been smooth and that the patient was awake.
