Pier Luigi Bersani, the former head of Italy's centre-left who narrowly missed out on the post of premier last year, suffered a brain haemorrhage on January 5, 2014, the hospital treating him said. The University of Parma hospital said the 61-year-old had been brought in after suffering from vomiting and dizziness and was undergoing surgery.
