(FILES)An F/A-18E Super Hornet takes off from the flight deck of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea on October 24, 2013. A Navy pilot was safely recovered at sea January 15, 2014 after his F/A-18 Super Hornet crashed about 45 miles off the Virginia Beach coast, the Navy said. The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. as the pilot was on a routine training mission in the single-seat jet fighter. He ejected and a life raft deployed. The Navy said it will investigate the cause of the crash. The crash comes exactly one week after a Navy helicopter went down in the Atlantic about 18 miles east of Virginia Beach, resulting in the deaths of three sailors. AFP PHOTO / ALBERTO PIZZOLI / FILES
