Women who had a breast removal mastectomy operation after contracting breast cancer take part in a fencing training in Ramonville-Saint-Agne, near Toulouse, southern France, on January 31, 2014. Over a hundred women having had a mastectomy due to breast cancer have benefited from a unique program promoting the practice of fencing as a means of lessening the chance of recurrence and so as to use less medication. An anaesthesiologist in a cancer unit at a hospital, Dominique Hornus-Dragne, was inspired to create the fencing workshop for breast cancer patients after many complained of the impossibility of going to the gym to practice a physical activity after their mastectomy operation. As a fully clothed sporting practice, fencing appealed to many of the women and served in many cases to give them back a feeling of dignity. AFP PHOTO / ERIC CABANIS
