WAR-WWI-HISTORY-CENTENARY-DESERTIONS-FILES
TO GO WITH AFP STORY
(FILES) - A photo taken on January 29, 2014 shows a monument in Nouvron-Vingre, northern France, in honor of six French soldiers from the 298 Roanne Infantry Regiment who were shot for desertion on December 4, 1914 in a nearby field. Deserting or fraternising with the enemy, the refusal to fight was a rare but recurring feature of World War I, from ill-armed soldiers baulking at the outset of war to exhausted troops downing weapons in its dying days.
