CAMEROON-HISTORY-INDEPENDENCE-ANNIVERSAY
Schoolchildren hold a giant Cameroonian flag as they parade on February 20, 2014 in Douala during ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of Cameroon's independence. In 1960, French Cameroon granted independence and the country became the Republic of Cameroon with Ahmadou Ahidjo as president. One year later, following a UN-sponsored referendum, the (British) Southern Cameroons joined the Republic of Cameroon to become the Federal Republic of Cameroon, while Northern Cameroons joined Nigeria.
