GREECE-PRISON-PRISONERS-JUSTICE-RIGHTS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY HELENE COLLIOPOULOU
A photo taken on December 2, 2005 shows Christodoulos Xiros, member of the Greek Revolutionary Organization 17 November (N17), arriving for his appeal trial at the special court in the top-security in Athens's Korydallos prison facility. Christodoulos Xiros, a leading hitman for November 17, disappeared on January 7 while on a nine-day prison leave. On the outskirts of the Greek capital, the high-security prison of Korydallos has traditionally held the country's most feared convicts. But in the wake of the crisis gripping the country -- and the exposure of new economic scandals -- a steady stream of formerly unthinkable faces have been added to the inmate pool. Named after the western Athens district in which it was built, Korydallos ('lark' in Greek) has some 2,500 inmates -- more than double its intended capacity. AFP PHOTO / Milos Bicanski
