GHANA-LIFESTYLE-MANUFACTURING-BUSINESS-ECONOMY-TECHNOLOGY

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY CHRIS STEIN

A view of a prototype helicopter at the Apostle Safo Technology Research Centre in Gomoa Mpota, Ghana, on February 12, 2014. From wooden TVs and talking robots to cars that start with gold watches, an inventor and church leader who calls himself the "Star of Africa" is hoping to transform Ghana's manufacturing sector. Ghana has seen a rise in its consumer class in recent years on the back of high economic growth, fuelling greater demand for cars, computers and mobile telephones. Few -- if any -- of the products are made in Ghana or anywhere else in Africa but that could all change if Kwadwo Safo has his way. For decades, Safo's company Kantanka has been producing prototype sport utility vehicles, televisions, switchboards and even robots, incorporating local woods and traditional patterns into their designs and showing them off at yearly exhibitions to much fanfare.
