(FILES) -- A file photo taken on April 28, 2004 shows a chain of volcanoes bordering the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Africa's most venerable wildlife reserve, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and already hard hit by deforestation, poaching and armed conflict, may be threatened by the quest for oil. Early in March, European Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs warned that "with oil production there would be a major risk of pollution at this site, located near the sources of the Nile." However, the small British company SOCO International PLC has responded to fears with assurances that its activities in the Virunga National Park, backed by the Kinshasa government, will respect the 800,000-hectare (two-million-acre) site.
