TOPSHOTS-INDIA-RELIGION-HINDU-FESTIVAL
TOPSHOTS
An Indian resident wearing traditional jewellery takes part in a procession celebrating 'Gudi Padwa' or the Maharashtrian new year in Mumbai on March 31, 2014. Gudi Padwa is the Hindu new year in the Indian state of Maharashtra and falls on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the lunar calendar. It is celebrated by dancing and singing with every member of the family wearing new clothes in traditional attire. The day traditionally starts with the cleaning ritual, in which the house is fully cleaned (in case of villages, it is then covered with fresh cow-dung). Women and children draw andpaint intricate rangoli designs using vibrant colors, in keeping with the spirit of the festival, on their doorsteps. AFP PHOTO/ INDRANIL MUKHERJEE
