AFGHANISTAN-HEALTH-BREAST CANCER

Afghan breast cancer patient Bassira, 38, listens to a doctor at a hospital in the northwestern city of Herat on April 2, 2014. Bassira is the mother of six children living in Siavoshan village in the outskirts of Herat. She went under lumpectomy surgery last year, which did not stop the growth of cancerous cells, and had to undergo a mastectomy to remove her left breast in April 2013. She was not advised by doctors to undertake chemotherapy following her operation and the pain caused by new lumps returned four months ago. Lack of illness acknowledgment, cancer treatment equipment and medicines, specialists and oncologists are the main problems that endanger lives of Afghan cancer patients. Bassira needs another surgery to remove the new lumps and start her chemotherapy but her husband, a farm labourer, able to afford the 60,000 Afghani (around 1100 USD) to buy medicine, or to provide more expenses for possible treatment abroad.
