SAFRICA-ECONOMY-MINING-STRIKE
Gogo Sophie, an elderly grandmother living in a shack outside one of Marikana Platinum mines, licks her sour milk covered fingers after she cut the plastic container to use the last drops of her meal on April 2, 2014. Government mediated talks - -that stalled through most of March -- have achieved little but widened the gap between the defiant union and the employers, Lonmin-- the world top three platinum producer with the miners and their families bearing most the brunt of the work stoppage. Over 80,000 workers downed tools across South Africa's platinum industry on January 23, holding out for a doubling of their entry-level salary to 12,500 rand ($1,170) a month.
