TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ISABELLE WESSELINGH - A police officer faces anti shale gas protesters holding banners reading "No to the shale gas Bacesti village" on April 8, 2014 in Pungesti as a bow with the colours of Romanian national flag is fixed on the fence of the first shale gas exploring site started by US energy giant Chevron. Chevron has permits to explore for shale gas in northeastern Romania as well as on Romania's Black Sea coast. The technique consists of pumping water and chemicals at high pressure into deep rock formations to free oil and gas, but critics point to studies that show fracking increases the risk of contaminating drinking water.
