FRANCE-WWI-DEMINING-HISTORY

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY KARINE ALBERTAZZI

Mine clearance experts of the civil safety show unexploded ordnance dating from World War I and found on the battlefield of the Vieil Armand, formely called Hartmannswillerkopf, on April 9, 2014, in Hartmannswiller, in the French eastern Vosges mountains. A hundred years after the beginning of the First World War, unexploded ordnance still lies underneath Alsace's grounds. Among the billion and a half munitions fired during the conflict, 20 percent failed to detonate, according to the Interdepartmental center of Colmar. AFP PHOTO / FREDERICK FLORIN
