People make the controversial 'quenelle' gestures as the police uses water cannon to disperse protestors who attempt to participate in an anti-Semitic congress "European Dissidents' Congress" on May 4 2014 in Brussels. Anderlecht Mayor Eric Tomas has banned the meeting organised by chamber member Laurent Louis in Anderlecht. The event was to bring together a string of far-right figures, including the comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who has faced repeated accusations of anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and incitement to racial hatred. The quenelle, described as an inverted Nazi salute, has been popularised by Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, and the gesture was condemned in France as anti-Semitic.
