BRITAIN-ROYAL-ORDER OF THE BATH

Sir Derek Oulton (C) waits in the Abbey cloisters ahead of the arrival of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to attend the Order of the Bath Service at Westminster Abbey in London on May 9, 2014. The service, held every four years, is always attended by Prince Charles but he is joined every eighth year by the Queen, who was last present in May 2006. The Queen is Sovereign Head of the military order while Charles is its Great Master. It originated in the medieval period when the honour was only conferred on a knight after he had performed a number of rituals designed to purify the inner soul - fasting, vigils and prayer, and cleansing by bathing. George I revived it in 1725 as a regular military order, to serve the purposes of the then prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, who required an additional source for political reward. The Order dates back to 1725 and uses Henry VII's Chapel in Westminster Abbey as its Chapel. The Queen is Sovereign Head of the Order of the Bath and Prince Charles is its Great Master.
