UKRAINE-UNREST-RUSSIA-CRISIS-POLITICS-VOTE
A woman cleans a poling station in a village near the eastern Ukrainian town of Velyka Novosilka on May 22, 2014, three days ahead of the presidential election. Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk accused Russia of trying to "escalate the conflict" and disrupt Sunday's vote, calling on the UN Security Council to hold an urgent meeting on the crisis. The winner of Ukraine's election will not only have to avert the country's imminent breakup but also force a frustrated public to accept painful belt-tightening measures that could save the economy from outright collapse. Pro-Russian rebels firing mortar shells and grenades killed 14 Ukrainian soldiers on Thursday, the blackest day yet for the military and a dramatic ratcheting up of tensions just three days before a crunch election.
