SPAIN-ROYALS-ABDICATE-POLITICS-FILES
(FILES) -- A file photo taken on March 11, 2007 shows Spain's King Juan Carlos (L) holding with his wife Queen Sofia a 3 minute silence during the inauguration of a memorial to the victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings outside Atocha station in Madrid, on the the third anniversary of the bombings. Spanish King Juan Carlos will abdicate in favour of his son Prince Felipe, the nation announced on June 2, 2014, ending a 39-year reign that ushered in democracy but was was later battered by royal scandals. The 76-year-old monarch, crowned in November 1975 after the death of General Francisco Franco, is stepping down dogged by health woes and with his popularity deeply eroded by scandals swirling around him and his family.
