US-SPACE-LDSD
This artist's concept obtained from NASA on June 3, 2014 shows the test vehicle for NASA's Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD), designed to test landing technologies for future Mars missions. A balloon will lift the vehicle to high altitudes, where a rocket will take it even higher, to the top of the stratosphere, at several times the speed of sound. NASA's flying saucer-shaped test vehicle will take to the skies from the US Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, for its first engineering shakeout flight. The objective of the LDSD project is to see if the cutting-edge, rocket-powered test vehicle operates as it was designed -- in near-space at high Mach numbers. Due to weather conditions, there will be no launch of the LDSD test vehicle on June 3, 2014. Other potential launch dates include June 5, 7, 9, 11 and 14, 2014.
