BNS S34 Tikuna Brazilian diesel-electric powered type 209 attack submarine crew members carry out a drill while moored at the navy base in Niteroi, Brazil, on May 27, 2014. With 8500 km of coastline and natural resources like the Presal oil reserves and the ore in "Blue Amazonia" to protect, Brazil is building four conventional (SSK) submarines and one nuclear-powered (SSN) with the assistance from France. The diesel submarines-electric boats will be variants of the CM-2000 French/Spanish Skorpene class and the first of them (SBR-1) will be finished in 2017. The 6,000 tons nuclear-powered submarine (SN-BR) will have an intermediate design falling between the French Rubis Amethyste and Barracuda SSNs classes fast attack boats and she is expected to enter service in 2021. The first conventinal submarine has been built at the submarine factory in Itaguai, some 70 km south from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 22, 2014. Brazilian Navy protects 8500 km of its coastline and hidden rich underwater resources such as oil and minerals and currently start building four conventional and the first nuclear submarine to replace current five conventional ones under the project of U.S. $ 23 billion held in partnership with France.
