INDIA-WILDLIFE-ELPHANT
In this photo taken on June 3, 2014, Indian forest guards throw fire crackers to scare away a herd of wild elephants roaming in the Kalabari forest close to the village of Naxalbari, close to the India-Nepal border some 50 kms from Siliguri. Indian forest guards and local villagers use firecrackers to scare away wild elephants, following the sighting of a herd, creating unease among local villagers. Man-elephant conflicts are on the rise in India as villagers and farmers encroach on the natural habitats of pachyderms, with villagers erecting electric fencing to protect their crops from foraging pachyderms. Asian elephants are listed as endangered - as the human population increases, the elephants' natural habitat is destroyed and they are forced to live in the farming areas where they can cause damage to crops.
