FRANCE-US-HISTORY-WWII-DDAY
US World War II veterans Angelo "uncle al" Lambino (R) and Irving Smolens (L) speak on June 4, 2014 at la Pointe du Hoc in Cricqueville-en-Bessin, western France, two days before the start of the D-Day commemorations. Lambino was a member of the 29th Division when he landed in Normandy on Omaha Beach and Smolens was artilleryman with the 4th Infantry Division when he landed on Utah beach, both on June 6, 1944 as part of 'Operation Overlord' during World War II. The D-Day ceremonies on June 6 this year mark the 70th anniversary since the launch of 'Operation Overlord', a vast military operation by Allied forces in Normandy, which turned the tide of World War II, eventually leading to the liberation of occupied France and the end of the war against Nazi Germany.
