INDIA-RELIGION-SIKH-PROTEST-FILES

(FILES) In this photograph taken on June 7, 1984, an Indian Sikh throws a tear gas canister back at Indian police after it was fired to break up violence around the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, as news of the death of Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale spread in Amritsar. Sikh radical outfits called for a shutdown of the holy city of Amritsar to commemorate the storming of the Golden Temple by the military, one of the most controversial events in Indian history. The raid on June 6, 1984, named Operation Blue Star, was aimed at flushing out Sikh separatists holed up inside and demanding an independent Sikh homeland called "Khalistan" in northern Punjab. The army's operation enraged Sikhs who accused the troops of desecrating the faith's holiest shrine. Indian government says about 400 people were killed but Sikh groups dispute the figure and claim thousands were killed, including innocent pilgrims. AFP PHOTO/STR/FILES
