KENYA-POLITICS-FREEDOM-PROTEST-OFFBEAT

Dedan Kimathi Waceke, the alleged grandson of Kenyan legendary freedom fighter Field-Marshal Dedan Kimathi Waciuri, chains himself to the bronze-cast statue of his grandfather at a monument on Kimathi street in the central business district of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, on June 9, 2014. Kimathi, who was found chained to the monument in the early hours today was protesting the government's neglect of the late freedom-hero's family whose daughter -- Waceke's mother -- is detained in a hospital back near her rural home in the central highlands for being unable to settle a medical bill. “He is only doing this because of frustration. His grandfather fought for this country, they built house for our ‘cucu’ (gandmother in Kikuyu language) but what about the children?", said his brother Kimathi Waciuri. Dedan Kimathi Waciuri (31 October 1920 – 18 February 1957) born Kimathi wa Waciuri, was a leader of the Mau Mau which led an armed military struggle known as the Mau Mau uprising against the British colonial government in Kenya in the 1950s before his capture and execution. Despite being viewed with disdain by the Jomo Kenyatta regime and subsequent governments, Kimathi and his fellow Mau Mau rebels are now officially recognised as heroes in the struggle for Kenyan independence by the incumbent government.
