ALBANIA-DRUGS-CRIME-POLICE
Albanian police stand in a courtyard as they comb houses in Lazarat, a village known as Europe's cannabis capital, south of the Albanian capital Tirana, on June 17, 2014. Hundreds of Albanian police tightened their siege on a village known as Europe's cannabis capital on Tuesday as gun battles between security forces and suspected drug dealers raged for a second day. Police who tried to enter the southern village of Lazarat on June 16 to destroy a huge drugs stockpile were repelled by heavy weapons fire, including anti-tank missiles and grenades. One officer has been wounded. According to Italian police the village produces 900 tonnes of cannabis each year worth some 4.5 billion euros ($6.1 billion) -- equivalent to almost half of Albania's gross domestic product.
