AMFOOT-NFL-REDSKINS-POLITICS-RACISM-FILES
(FILES) This October 30, 2013 file photo shows Ray Halbritter, Oneida Indian Nation Representative, as he speaks at a press conference after meeting with senior officials of the National Football League about changing the mascot name of the Washington Redskins in New York. The US Patent Office has ruled on June 18, 2014 that the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team's federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. The 2-1 ruling came after a campaign to change the name which has gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn't immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the team's name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from US President Barack Obama, civil rights groups and lawmakers of both political parties.
