The first non-governmental flight to leave the Earth-s atmosphere is scheduled to take place 21 June 2004 from Mojave, CaliforniaThe craft, SpaceShipOne, which aims to rise more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) above the earth surface traveling at more than three times the speed of sound, was dreamed up by Burt Rutan, 61, a US engineer who had already worked on "Voyager". At that height, test pilot Michael Melvill will experience weightlessness and see the sky above as black. SpaceShipOne will re-enter the atmosphere for an un-assisted airstrip landing.
