Ayaka Shiomura, a member of the Tokyo metropolitan assembly, speaks to reporters as fellow assembly member Akihiro Suzuki apologized to her for a recent sexist jeer at Tokyo city hall on June 23, 2014. Suzuki, a member of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling party, admitted on June 23 he had been responsible for a sexist taunt shouted at the young assemblywoman in a debate on motherhood. The episode, which took place on June 17, has undermined Abe's repeated appeals for Japan to boost the role of its under-employed women and encourage them into more senior positions.
