US-LANDMINE-PROTEST-FILES
(FILES) Landmine survivors urge US President Bill Clinton to sign the Treaty to Ban Landmines by dropping their prosthetic devices on the sidewalk in front of the White House in Washington, DC, in this March 1, 1999, file photo during a protest sponsored by the Landmine Survivors Network. The survivors believe the US "no sign" policy undermines the global effectiveness in banning mines, de-mining, and providing humanitarian relief to victims. The US said on June 27, 2014, it will not produce anti-personnel landmines in the future and intends to join a treaty banning their use. "Today at a review conference in Maputo, Mozambique, the United States took the step of declaring it will not produce or otherwise acquire any anti-personnel landmines (APL) in the future, including to replace existing stockpiles as they expire," a White House statement said.
