French artists and entertainment workers, known in France as "Intermittents du spectacle", hold a banner reading "Wake up, be indignant, let's revolt" demonstrate on July 3, 2014 in Aix-en-Provence, a day after the opening of the city's Opera Festival. French entertainment workers have been holding for weeks rolling strikes and demonstrations against the new government measure, effective on July 1, aiming at cutting their benefits. The Festival of Aix-en-Provence opened the season of great summer festivals without a hitch on July 2, but the threat of disturbances related to the "intermittents" movement increased with the interruption of the dress rehearsal of "The Prince of Homburg" in Avignon, two days before its first show.
