FRANCE-OVERSEAS-HERITAGE
Competitors take part on July 14, 2014 in a fruit carrier race during the annual Heiva Tu’aro Ma’ohi sporting event, bringing together since 2006 more than 400 athletes from the five archipelagoes of the French overseas territory of Polynesia and the whole Pacific region in Papeete, the capital of the French Polynesian island of Tahiti. Heiva, an annual festival that has become emblematic of Polynesian culture. “Heiva,” which comes from the Polynesian words meaning “to assemble” and “community places,” celebrates traditional Polynesian activities, including festivals, music, dancing, singing, and sporting events.
