SOMALIA-UNREST

Security in the restive capital has been stepped up following a major bomb and armed attack carried out by Islamist Shebab rebels on Somalia's presidential palace late on July 8. The attack came shortly after the start of Iftar, when Muslims end the day's Ramadan fast. Hardline Shebab insurgents once controlled most of southern and central Somalia, including large parts of the capital, but were driven out of fixed positions in Mogadishu and Somalia's major towns by the African Union force.
