Roger Cukierman, president of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions, (Conseil Representatif des Institutions juives de France, CRIF), delivers a speech during a ceremony marking the 72nd anniversary of the Vel d'Hiv Roundup (Rafle du Velodrome d'Hiver) in Paris on July 20, 2014, the national day of remembrance of the victims of racist and anti-Semitic persecutions by the French State. On July 16 and 17, 1942 the Vichy police arrested 13,152 people, including more than 4,000 children, during the largest roundup of Jews carried out in France. Valls said on July 20 that the "unacceptable excesses" that took place in Paris on July 19 during a pro-Palestinian demonstration "further justified" the banning of the demonstration by the authorities.
