INDIA-HEALTH-ENCEPHALITIS

Indian municipal workers fumigate an area where pigs, thought to attract mosquitoes carrying Japanese encephalitis, are kept at a makeshift housing settlement in Siliguri on July 23, 2014. Outbreaks of encephalitis in India have killed more than 150 people, with health officials on alert fearing the death toll could rise further, state government directors said. Some 102 people have died in West Bengal state from the mosquito-borne virus which affects mainly malnourished children and can cause brain damage and seizures, said medical education director Sushanta Banerjee. Many of the deaths have occurred since the onset of the monsoon season in June when mosquitoes breed in large numbers. AFP PHOTO/ Diptendu DUTTA
