French President Francois Hollande (R) and his German counterpart Joachim Gauck pay their respects during a commemoration ceremony in the crypt of the WWI Hartmannswillerkopf National Monument, or Vieil Armand, in Wattwiller, northeastern France, on August 3, 2014, marking the centenary of Germany's declaration of war to France. Hollande and Gauck paid joint tribute to the soldiers who died after Germany declared war on France exactly 100 years ago. The two leaders gathered at Hartmannswillerkopf to remember the 30,000 soldiers who lost their lives in the fierce World War I battles around this rocky peak in France's Alsace region near the border between the two countries.
