Still struggling with the difficult transition to digital, the US press must also face the future without being able to count on the support of parent companies with deep pockets. A wave of unprecedented splits among the big media "certainly gives the impression that newspapers are children driven from home by their parents," says Mark Jurkowitz, associate director of the research center Pew journalism. A growing number of important stakeholders have split their print media from their audiovisual divisions. It started last in the summer of 2013 with the empire of Rupert Murdoch (Wall Street Journal, New York Post), followed in 2014 by Time Warner (Time, People, Fortune and Sports Illustrated), Tribune Co.
