Pope Francis opened the way on August 18, 2014 to the beatification for Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, saying there are no more doctrinal problems blocking the process for the slain archbishop. Romero was assassinated on March 24 1980 by gunmen linked to El Salvador's right-wing military government at the time in the midst of a brutal civil war that began in 1979 and ended in 1992.
