EL SALVADOR-RELIGION-ROMERO-FILES

(FILES) This 24 March 1981 file photo shows nuns and parishioners surrounding late San Salvador Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero (C) after he had been lethally shot in the face by a sniper from the extreme-right death squads while celebrating Mass at the chapel of the "Divina Providencia" cancer ward in San Salvador, El Salvador. Pope Francis opened the way on August 18, 2014 to the beatification for Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, saying there are no more doctrinal problems blocking the process for the slain archbishop. Romero was assassinated on March 24 1980 by gunmen linked to El Salvador's right-wing military government at the time in the midst of a brutal civil war that began in 1979 and ended in 1992.
