TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY NICHOLE SOBECKI

(FILES) -- A file picture taken on November 10, 2013 shows the Demba and Dupont statue, a World War I memorial commemorating the fallen and honouring the brotherhood between Senegal and France, at the Rifleman's Square in Dakar. The bronze statue, created in 1923 by French sculptor Paul Ducuing, stands outside Dakar's railway station and portrays African infantryman Demba and French soldier Dupont, both holding olive branches. Far from the freezing mud trenches of Europe's Western Front, the rocky ditches and stone forts where soldiers fought bloody colonial battles of World War I on Kenya's vast Tsavo plains still remain today.
