German university professor Andreas Fath swims near kayakers during the last stage of his swimming journey in Hoek van Holland, The Netherlands, on August 24, 2014. Fath, a chemistry Professor at Furtwangen University in Germany, swam the Rhine river from its source in Switzerland to its estuary into the North Sea in the Netherlands, a distance of 1.247 km, as part of a project called “Rheines Wasser”. During the trip, which started on July 28, 2014, Fath took water samples from the Rhine to test the water quality, but also to raise awareness for the importance of water as a resource and the need for increased water protection.
