TO GO WITH AFP STORY "Latin America, the new frontier for oil investment"
(FILE) Picture taken on September 4, 2006 in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of the Mexican state of Campeche, of a Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) oil rig. Latin American countries are betting strong for foreign investment to develop their oil industry, modifying legal frameworks to entice multinational oil companies, without compromising the primacy of the state in the sector. Mexico, Brazil and Argentina draw much of the attention due to their untapped oilfields and the possibility of further developing the existing ones. Uruguay agreed with the United Nations on August 2014 (to be officially announced in 2015) to extend its continental platform from 200 miles to 350 which will allow the country to broaden the exploration on maritime space for accumulations of hydrocarbons and gas.
