INDIA-ECONOMY-POLITICS-BANKING
To go with India-economy-politics-banking,FOCUS by Penelope MACRAE
An Indian customer (background L) exits a Bank of Maharashtra branch as a fruit vendor (foreground) passes by at Galand viallage in Ghaziabad on August 22, 2014. New right-wing premier Narendra Modi has put India's drive to give bank accounts to all citizens on a war-footing to overcome abject poverty and tackle corruption, but experts say the task ahead is massive. In Western nations, bank branches are everywhere. But banking services in India leave out nearly half the 1.2 billion population, putting poor people at mercy of moneylenders who charge usurious interest for emergency loans for sickness or routine purchases such as buying seeds for sowing.
