COLOMBIA-AUC-PEACE TALKS
A mine crippled member of the right-wing paramilitary United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) manufactures his own prosthesis at a paramilitar hospital in San Rafael de Rialito, Cordoba, 30 June 2004. The Colombian government kicked off peace negotiations with right-wing paramilitaries, 01 July 2004, in a bid to demobilize the 20,000-strong private armed groups. Rodrigo Tovar, head of the AUC-s North Bloc faction who kidnapped former senator Jose Gnecco last Monday stating he was a drug trafficker, decided to release him "in line with his firm position in favor of peace."
